The story is more interesting than I had expected, and there's a lot to read/listen to in the game, only a small amount of which is actually useful to progress the story. The game itself involves finding documents, audio recording, relics and items that are used to progress through the story of Blood Ties. It doesn't really make any difference to the narrative or gameplay, but it's something I noticed while trying the two different modes. For example, it's possible to jump from the balcony in the main hallway to reach the floor below, which is not possible in VR mode. Playing on the TV adds at least one additional (very minor) puzzle, and allows more flexibility in movement. There are a few minor differences between VR and TV modes. The "Free" control mode was by far preferable for me, although movement and turning is somewhat slow, even at the fastest settings. The game forces you to begin with the default "comfort" controls, which uses Vive-style teleportation and snap rotation, but after you've started, you're free to switch to "Free" control mode, which allows you to use the analogue sticks as if you're playing an FPS. In VR, Blood Ties is played in first-person and thus you cannot see Lara (your/her body is invisible). Of course, I opted for the VR mode, which is quite different. In this case, you control Lara in in third-person just like you do in the main game.
I was surprised to find that Blood Ties can also be played without VR, which I was unaware of. If you're the kind of person who enjoys written/audio narrative and escape rooms, you might find Blood Ties enjoyable (though a bit on the easy side), otherwise if you're expecting more typical Tomb Raider action, you're likely to be disappointed. There's no action in Blood Ties it is simply about exploration and simple puzzle solving. In case it isn't obvious, Blood Ties is entirely different from the main game. I haven't seen Blood Ties mentioned much around here, but having finally played it last night (despite buying it at PSVR launch), I thought I'd give my two cents on it.
